University of Gothenburg - The Sahlgrenska Academy

The Sahlgrenska Academy is the faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Gothenburg. The faculty has broad research activities in Health Sciences and consists of six institutes covering health and care sciences, medicine and dentistry. The incorporation of these six Health Science institutes in one faculty promotes efficient interdisciplinary collaboration.

The faculty provides 18 educational programs, several of which are among the most popular in the country. The Sahlgrenska Academy holds high international standard in Health Sciences research and includes prominent research environments in for example pharmacology, obesity, children’s health, odontology and cardiovascular disease. Education and research at Sahlgrenska Academy is performed in close collaboration with the Regional Health Services in Västra Götaland, in particular the Sahlgrenska University Hospital, as well as with the Swedish Dental Service (Folktandvården).

The roles of GU and SA in the wearITmed project

In the wearITmed project the role of the clinical researchers at the Sahlgrenska Academy is to identify the physiological and movement related variables for which garment integrated sensors would be most useful. They will also implement the techniques developed in the project in clinical projects within three neurological disease groups: epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease and stroke. The research questions in the projects can be very different but there are also important similarities which will lead to synergy in the design of garments aimed for a versatile use in both hospital and outpatient settings. The close collaboration between researchers and the interweaved working process will facilitate the end result, targeted to the patients both in hospital and home environments. One of the first steps in the projects is also to identify possible barriers and facilitators for the use of new technology through focus group interviews with the end users.
