Epilepsy is one of the most common chronic neurological diseases. In Sweden there are 60- 70,000 people with epilepsy, of which approximately 10,000 are children. Every year, about 3,000 adults and 1000 children receive an epilepsy diagnosis. The risk of epilepsy is greatest during the first months after birth and after the age of 65.

There are many underlying causes of epilepsy, ranging from genetic causes to structural changes in the brain. In children, the most common causes are genetic causes, malformations of cortical development or injuries related to birth, while stroke, traumatic brain injury and brain tumors are the main causes in the elderly.

The treatment of epilepsy is mainly pharmacological, but for selected patients, surgical treatment, neuromodulation (e.g., vagus nerve stimulation) or dietary therapies are valuable treatment options.

The Epilepsy Research Group has a wide range of clinical research interests: biomarkers for epilepsy, development and outcome of various antiepileptic treatments, comorbidities in epilepsy, cognitive effects of epilepsy or epilepsy treatment, health economics and qualitative studies with interviews with patients with epilepsy and/or their carers or family members. We also collaborate with experimental researchers, partly with studies of brain tissue from epilepsy surgery, and partly with studies of brain activity in persons who have depth electrodes implanted in the brain as part of an investigation for epilepsy surgery. The Epilepsy Research Group has both national and international collaborations.
