About Lars Frisén

The eye and the brain have tight and widespread connections. The brain analyses the neural signals from the eye's photoreceptors in a multitude of complex ways and the brain controls many complex eye functions, for example, eye movements. Diseases of the nervous system are often manifested as visual disturbances, or as changes inside the eye, or both, and analysis of such abnormalities constitute important components of the clinical management. The research group has developed several diagnostic techniques, including novel ways of vision testing and photographic documentation. These have found widespread use internationally. Current developments are centered on smartphone apps, for example, the MultiBit Vision Test and VisionSx. The former serves self-monitoring of age-related macula degeneration. The latter is an interactive visual catalogue of common visual disturbances and aims to facilitate diagnosis.
